INTERN 2 - RECYCLING ANTI-CONTAMINATION PROJECT
JOB SUMMARY
The primary purpose of this position is to assist the project manager with carrying out an Anti-Contamination Program throughout University City. This internship is funded by a grant from the Saint Louis County Department of Public Health utilizing County landfill surcharge funds. This internship will provide an in-depth look at the recycling process - challenges and successes. The purpose of this program is to implement a comprehensive education and operations behavior strategy to decrease contamination from curbside recycling programs while increasing recycling. A component of this project is to engage with residents directly and indirectly to change the curbside recycling behavior of those contaminating the stream.
Daily activities leading up to the audit will include training on recycling procedures and collection routes throughout the city to audit recycling carts with the assistance of the Solid Waste Division and general planning of mobilizing cart inspectors daily on recycling collection routes. During the audit, daily activities will include meeting staff in the field, directing and participating in cart inspection. The carts will be visually inspected and tagged based on the quality of the materials. Results will then be recorded, and the routes will be revisited the following week to determine if improvements have been made or if carts will need to be re-tagged. Follow up with staff and the Recycling Facility will be necessary. Reporting of results and next steps will be required. All work will be done under the close supervision of the project manager.
Estimated 25 hours per week. Expected duration: May 2020 July 2020.
6am 11am: Primary field work
Major Responsibilities
The internship will be a hands-on learning experience, from researching best practices of reducing contamination in curbside recycling to increasing the quantity and quality of recyclable materials. The intern will also assist with training volunteers, recording routes and results, and working with city staff on the program.

- Collaborating with St. Louis County Department of Public Health
- Develop best routes of audits with city staff and communicate with cart inspectors
- Assist in training staff on recycling contamination and process of audit
- Communicate with residents and city staff on process
- Develop and distribute promotional and informational materials
- Waste and recycling data collection
- Attend departmental and other related meetings as applicable
- Monitor, sort, and collect data on recycling containers
- Monitor, inventory, and apply signage
- Post educational and informational materials on social media, post signage, hang flyers, etc.
- Ride along on sanitation routes
- Other duties as assigned
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Excellent written and oral communications skills, substantial amount of recycling knowledge, strong desire to learn about waste management, professionalism while working in the business community, knowledge of Microsoft Office. Knowledge of University City street map is a plus. Experience and understanding of the rules of recycling and how to improve it for both public agency and its constituents is essential. The ability to respectfully communicate the rules and needed recycling changes is key.
