Inspector I
The Inspector I is responsible for enforcement of the various municipal construction, development,
nuisance and property maintenance codes adopted by the City, under the administrative direction of
the Lead Property Maintenance Inspector within the Planning & Development Department.
This is full time inspection and enforcement position to ensure compliance with City municipal codes,
including the property maintenance code, fire code, environmental code, other construction codes and
related ordinances. Work is performed both in the office and in the field and involves considerable
contact with the public and other persons engaged in property maintenance and construction codes.
Work will also involve the preparation of daily reports and records on findings. Work assignments and
instructions are received orally or in writing from a supervisor or staff members. Employees proceed
with their assignments with a high level of independence except in cases of prolonged or very difficult
enforcement problems for which they may receive assistance from a supervisor or other inspector.

- Performs onsite inspections for effective enforcement of municipal ordinances, including
adopted property maintenance, fire, construction, environmental health and safety codes - Determines if property maintenance or upkeep is in compliance with appropriate codes and
ordinances - Investigates and reports on all complaint assignments
- Keeps active and up-to-date office files on all work in process
- Checks for compliance with time limits and reports all non-compliance
- Counsels owners, agents, tenants and others on matters relating to the appropriate code
requirements being enforced - Reports violations of various codes being enforced to responsible persons
- Prepares reports and accumulates data for court hearings and if corrective measures are not
taken; testifies in court as required - Compiles statistics on activities for various private and governmental agencies including
departmental records as needed - Performs proactive inspection sweeps of the city, unrelated to a compliant or scheduled
inspection, to ensure compliance of regulations or policies set forth by the City - Performs other work as assigned
- Performs tasks with inspection-tracking software
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- ICC certification as a Property Maintenance Inspector
- Experience and display of code enforcement skills
- Experience and display of good customer service skills
- Experience and display of good verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to become knowledgeable of City-specific environmental health and safety codes,
property maintenance codes, fire codes, construction codes, and related laws and ordinances
within a reasonable amount of time - Ability to enforce ordinances and other regulations with firmness and tact while exercising
good customer service skills - Ability to work on standard assignments without direct supervision
- Ability to exercise good judgment in determining the best action for violations
Ability to keep organized records and to prepare reports - Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the
general public, positively contributing to a team environment - Understanding of basic computer functionality and the ability to learn new software processes
- Ability to type a minimum of 20 wpm preferred
MINIMAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduation from high school, preferably supplemented by additional education
- Prior experience with code enforcement
- Prior experience with customer service preferred
- Proficiency with computers, including Microsoft Word and Excel or comparable software programs preferred
- Positive customer-service attitude, initiative, innovation, creative-problem solving skills, and ability to work independently
- Good oral and written communication skills including good phone etiquette
- Good driving record and a valid driver's license
- Must obtain ICC certification as a Property Maintenance Inspector within the twelve months of employment
- Bilingual Preferred
