Public Works/Solid Waste Management Crew Leader

JOB PURPOSE:

The purpose of this position is to employ waste control and disposal methods such as source reduction, recycling, re-use, and landfilling to create a positive environmental impact and effectively protect the health and safety of City residents. Work consists of supervising and assisting a crew in completing assigned projects under the direction of the Sanitation Superintendent, who issues work orders and inspects work in progress and upon completion for adherence to orders and accepted standards of workmanship. Crew Leaders are expected, however, to complete routine assignments without detailed supervision.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Supervises personnel and the use of equipment in the various processes of solid waste removal.
  • Monitors hours and attendance of drivers and laborers to minimize overtime and ensure that drivers do not exceed limits established by regulatory agencies.
  • Organizes and schedules all necessary resources required to accomplish job assignments and coordinate daily operational needs with team.
  • Plans, distributes, monitors, and follows-up daily on route assignments to ensure customers are serviced per company standards and agreements.
  • Manages end-of-day check-in process, captures and communicates key services, safety, and equipment issues.
  • Assists with data collection and reporting to create weekly review.
  • Conducts Root Cause Investigations for all injuries and incidents, ensuring consistent discipline and retraining.
  • Prepares written and oral reports for superiors.
  • Performs other duties as required and/or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent certification.
  • Between one and three years of experience working in Solid Waste Removal.
  • Hazardous Material Certification is required.
  • Familiarity with plastics HDPE #1/#2, PET plastic, shrink wraps, various grades of Styrofoam, and acceptable waste at different facilities.
  • Some experience in the supervision of labor crews and the use of equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in Solid Waste Removal.
  • Knowledge of the hazards and safety equipment of the work.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Access.
  • Written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Excellent organization skills.
  • Physical strength and endurance.
  • Frequently requires talking, feeling attributes of objects (e.g., determining size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with fingertips), grasping, standing, and walking; occasionally requires pushing, driving, reaching with hands/arms; stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing or balancing, repetitive wrist, and or finger movement, and moving up and down from/to sitting position on the floor.
  • Valid, current driver's license required.
